As for the material, many would recommend a 60-40 polyester-cotton mix, largely because you need to choose a material that is easy to clean, and obviously machine washable. If this means that you don’t get the curtains of your choice, so be it, because nothing can be worse than buying kitchen curtains that may look gorgeous at the window, but that will pick up dirt and grime and then be impossible to clean. Therefore, be practical and remember that this is the kitchen you are buying curtains for. Actually, I’ll stick my neck out here and recommend sheer kitchen curtains, because they perfectly combine classiness and utility. They look gorgeous, of course, and are perfectly functional too, because they block excess sunlight without blocking the actual light, so the atmosphere in your kitchen is one of peace and serenity. Besides, they show off your window to great advantage, particularly if you have large windows. Of course, you may have to use sheer curtains in combination with some other material, which is what I did for the bottom half of my windows. The top remained sheer, and the effect was splendid because the sunlight streamed in through the top and all I had to do when I wanted more sunlight was to pull the heavy curtains aside at the bottom and leave the sheer sheath undisturbed. Magical. |
